사람들도, 풍경도, 어쩐지 현실 세계같이 안 보인단 말이야."
그녀는 테이블에 한쪽 팔꿈치로 턱을 괸 채 내 얼굴을 물끄러미
바라보았다.
"짐 모리슨의 노래에 분명히 그런 게 있었어."
"People are strange when you are a stranger(낯선 곳에
가면 사람들은 모두 낯설게 보이는 거야ㅡ)"
"피스(peace)" 하고 그녀가 말했다.
"피스" 하고 나도 따라했다.
"나와 함께 우루과이로 가버리는 게 어때?" 하고 그녀는 계속 한
쪽 팔꿈치를 괸 채로 말했다. "애인이나 가족이나 대학 따위는 모두
버리고 말야."
"그것도 나쁘지 않겠군."하고 나는 웃으면서 말했다.
"모든 걸 내팽개치고, 알고 있는 사람이라곤 하나도 없는 곳으로
가버리는 거, 멋있다고 생각되지 않아? 난 이따금 그러고 싶어져,
굉장히. 그러니까 만일 자기가 나를 갑자기 어딘가 먼 곳으로 데려
다 준다면, 난 자기를 위해 소처럼 튼튼한 아기를 잔뜩 낳아 줄 거
야. 그리고 모두들 즐겁게 지내는 거야. 마룻바닥을 데굴데굴 굴러
다니면서 말이지."
나는 웃으면서 세 잔째 보드카 토닉을 주욱 들이켰다.
"소처럼 튼튼한 아기는 아직 갖고 싶지 않은가 보네?" 하고 그녀
는 말했다.
"굉장히 흥미는 있어. 어떻게 생겼는지 보고 싶기도 하고."
"괜찮아. 갖고 싶지 않아도." 하고 그녀는 피스타치오를 먹으면서
말했다. "나 역시 낮술을 마신 김에 터무니없는 생각을 해봤을 뿐이
니까. 모든 걸 내팽개치고 어디로든 가버리고 싶다고 말야. 어차피
우루과이 같은 델 가봐도 당나귀 똥 같은 것밖엔 없을 거야."
"그럴지도 몰라."
"어딜 가나 당나귀 똥밖엔 없을 거야. 여기에 있는 저기 가든. 세
계는 온통 당나귀 똥뿐야."
