One day I Wrote her name upon the strand
But came the waves and washed it away;
Again I wrote it with a second hand,
But came the tide, and made my pains his prey.
"Vain man" said she, "that dost in vain assay
A motal thing so to immortalize!
For I my self shall like to this decay,
And eek my name be wiped out likewise."
"Not so", quoth I "let baser things devise
To die in dust, but you shall live by fame:
My verse your virtues rare shall eternize,
And in the heavens write your glorious name;
where, whenas death shall all the world subdue,
Our love shall live, and later life renew."

어느 날 난 그녀의 이름을 백사장에 썼다.
그러나 파도가 곧 밀려와 그 이름을 씻어가 버렸다.
난 다시 그 이름을 썼다.
그러나 바닷물이 밀려와 또 내 수고를 삼켜 버렸다.
"부질없는 이여," 그녀가 말했다.
"부질없는 일을 애쓰는군요.
그런 일로 죽을 운명의 존재를
죽지 않는 것으로 하려 하지 말아요.
나 자신도 결국은 이 모래처럼 될 거에요.
내 이름 또한 이처럼 씻겨 없어질 거니까요."
"아닙니다." 난 말했다.
"천한 것은 죽어서 흙으로 돌아갈지라도
당신은 그 명성으로 길이 남을 것입니다.
내가 쓴 시가 당신의 고귀한 미덕을 영원히 전하고
하늘에 당신의 고귀한 이름을 새길 것입니다.
그곳에서,
설사 죽음이 온 세상에 지배한다 해도,
하늘에서 우리 사랑 살아남아
새로운 삶을 살것입니다." //
